Fort McNair is home to the historical preservation of military history dating back to World War II. The center at Fort McNair is divided into four divisions which offer museum facilities and preservation of artifacts that are considered the Army’s historical treasures. The center also offers publications documenting the histories through the use of the web and available on compact disk. Fort McNair is also home to the Inter-American Defense College which is an advanced-studies institute for senior officers of the 25-member nations of the Inter-American Defense Board. The college has been located on Fort McNair since 1962. Fort McNair is located in Washington D.C. where the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers meet. It is the third oldest Army post, next to West Point and Carlisle Barracks. The Fort Myer Military Community includes both Fort McNair and Fort Myer. Military personnel are asked to report to the Army post in the National Capital Region to apply for housing at Fort McNair. If soldiers are looking for on-post housing at Fort McNair, contact the Fort Belvoir Residential Communities, LLC at 703-454-9700. The Rental Partnership Program is available to offer assistance with off-post housing and offers apartments at reduced rents. Homes for rent are also available, and BAH rates can be utilitized to cover rent and some utilities. Temporary lodging is offered in suites, and check in at the registration desk at Wainwright Hall at Fort Myer is necessary before proceeding to Fort McNair.
Fort Myer offers a Child Development Center at 102 Carpenter Road that offers childcare and preschool for children from 6 weeks to 5 years of age. Childcare fees are based on family income, and all active duty military and DoD civilian employees are eligible for the programs. The new Child Development Center is the largest facility in the Department of Defense. For further information on specific programs, contact the center in Building 469 on Fort Myer. Schools for both Fort Myer and Fort McNair are part of the Arlington County Public Schools. Students living on Fort Myer will attend the Arlington County Public Schools. There are 21 elementary schools, 4 countrywide alternative schools, 4 team schools, and 21 neighborhood schools available. For further information on certain school districts, call 703-696-3817. The School Liaison Office is located in Building 203 at 102 Custer Road on Fort Myer.
